How to edit a PDF without uploading it
- Open a PDF — drag and drop it or browse from your device. It is opened directly in your browser, not uploaded.
- Edit on your device — click any line of the document’s own text to retype it in place, or add text boxes, highlights, shapes, freehand notes and images. Reorder, rotate or delete pages, and add more PDFs to combine them.
- Export — your edits are flattened into a new PDF that you download. The original file is never modified.
Change the text that is already in the PDF
Most “PDF editors” only let you type a new box on top of the page. This one edits the document’s own text: pick the Edit existing text tool and click a line, and the editor reads that line’s words, works out its font, size and colour, samples the paper colour behind it, and hands it to you to retype where it sits. On export the original line is covered with that sampled colour and your wording is drawn on the same baseline.
It works a line at a time and does not reflow the paragraph around it, which makes it right for the things people actually need to fix — a wrong date, a misspelled name, a stale amount, an old address — and wrong for rewriting a page of prose.
Change text colour, size and font in a PDF
Select a line you have replaced and a style bar appears beside it: sans-serif, serif or monospace, an exact point size, bold, italic, and a colour picker for the text itself. Colour is the one property that matches exactly — it is a hex value you choose, not an approximation — while the font is a close standard match rather than the document’s own embedded typeface.
The second swatch, Cover, is the paint laid over the original line. The editor samples the page behind the text and is usually right; where the line sits on a shaded box, a gradient or a scan it outlines the swatch in amber and asks you to match it by eye. Getting that one colour right is what makes an edit invisible.
Private by design
Most online PDF editors upload your document to their servers. Ours doesn’t — the editor runs inside your browser, so contracts, bank statements, ID scans and other sensitive documents never leave your machine. This is enforced by a Content-Security-Policy that blocks the page from talking to any third-party server. Read more in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I need a membership for this tool?
Because rewriting the text inside an existing document is the same capability that forges an invoice, a payslip or a statement. Since your file never reaches us, we cannot tell a legitimate correction from a forgery — so the editor is offered to signed-in members who have accepted our Acceptable Use Policy, the explicit undertaking not to falsify documents, and misuse is traceable to an account rather than anonymous. Your file is unaffected by any of this: it is still opened, edited and saved entirely in your browser and never uploaded. Merging, splitting and compressing PDFs remain free and need no account.
Are there watermarks or page limits?
No. Nothing is added to your document and there is no page cap — the whole job runs on your own device. What the membership buys is access to the text-editing tools themselves, not a limit removal.
Can I edit a PDF without uploading it?
Yes — that is the whole point of this editor. It runs entirely in your browser: your file is opened and edited in your browser's memory and never transmitted anywhere. Our pages ship a Content-Security-Policy that makes the browser block requests to other origins, so this is enforced technically, not just promised.
Can I change the text colour, font or size?
Yes. Select a line you have replaced and a style bar appears next to it with the font family (sans-serif, serif or monospace), an exact point size, bold, italic, a colour picker for the text, and a second picker for the colour painted over the original line. Text colour matches exactly because you pick the hex value; the font is a close standard match rather than the document's own embedded typeface.
What can I edit in a PDF?
You can retype the text that is already in the document, and add text boxes, highlights, rectangles, ellipses, lines, freehand drawings and images. You can also reorder, rotate and delete pages, and combine several PDFs into one.
Can I change text that is already in the PDF?
Yes. Choose the “Edit existing text” tool and click a line: the editor reads that line's own words, works out its font, size and colour, samples the paper colour behind it, and lets you retype it where it sits. When you export, the old line is covered with the sampled background colour and your version is drawn on the same baseline, so it lands in the same place at the same size.
How close is the edited text to the original?
Close, but not identical. The replacement is drawn in a standard font matched to the original — sans-serif, serif or monospace, with bold and italic — rather than the document's own embedded font, so letter spacing can differ slightly. That is most visible on justified paragraphs and tightly kerned headings, and least visible on ordinary body text, names, dates and numbers. The editor works one line at a time and does not reflow a paragraph, so a much longer replacement grows its own line rather than pushing the next one down.
Which text can't be edited this way?
Text in a scanned page, because a scan is an image with no text in it — you will see a notice saying so, and you can cover and retype manually instead. Text set at an angle or vertically is skipped for the same reason it looks wrong when patched: the cover rectangle would not line up with it. Arabic and Indic scripts are not reshaped, so they are best left alone.
What happens to my edits when I download?
Everything you added is flattened — permanently drawn into the page content. The downloaded PDF looks the same in every viewer, and your annotations cannot be accidentally moved or deleted later.
Does it work with non-English text like ₹ amounts?
Yes — text boxes support the rupee sign and European characters via an embedded Unicode font. Full Indic scripts (Devanagari, Tamil, etc.) are not supported yet.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The editor supports touch — drag, resize, draw and pinch-to-zoom all work on Android and iPhone. Very large PDFs are limited by your device's memory.
Are password-protected PDFs supported?
Yes. Drop the file in as usual: if it only carries printing or copying restrictions, the editor removes them silently, and if it needs a password to open, it asks you for one right there. Decryption happens in your browser like everything else — neither the file nor the password is uploaded. The edited copy you download is unencrypted, so protect it again with our Password Protect PDF tool if you need it locked.
